Since then, she has worked in education in a variety of settings including teaching elementary, high school and college courses, curriculum design and consulting, private coaching, workshop facilitating and non-profit outreach. Working with students one-on-one is by far her favorite teaching method due to its effectiveness and the lasting bonds she is able to create with her students and clients. For the past four years, she has solely in private education, serving over fifty students and their families.

Sophie’s expertise extends to executive functioning, English, history, art and early math and sciences. She has taught almost every subject in nearly every grade. Two things allow her to succeed at her work: 1. She is a life-long student and relishes the opportunity to learn alongside her students. 2. Her students and their families have become her friends and family. Her work has extended to leisurely activities such as enjoying holidays, birthdays, school plays, 5ks, helping to move students into their college dorms and even enjoying Europe graduation trips with her students. Sophie’s deep relationships with her students allows her to teach and mold positive learning behaviors in a manner which is child-center, individualized, fun-focused and long-lasting. Collaborating with family members and her own team, she is adept at maximizing the strengths of her students to best enrich their minds and souls.

Creative Tutoring Solutions has been a dream of hers for the past decade. She is excited to bring together this team of educators, therapists, coaches and care-providers and to work side-by-side with these professionals who are motivated to improve young lives through facilitating educational and enrichment opportunities.

  • Jen Hanis-Martin, PhD

Subjects: Social Studies, Social Sciences, English, Essay Writing, Basic Statistics, Research Design, Organization, Communications, Movement, Yoga and Dance

Education: PhD Sociology - University of Chicago

BA Sociology - Indiana University South Bend

I have spent most of my career in research administration as a sociologist, research director, writer, and editor, and have maintained a heavy yoga and dance habit in my free time. I have worked with and taught young people of all ages over the years in subjects including but not limited to research design, writing, sociological and feminist theory, and ballet. I look forward to getting out from behind my laptop to come work with your student. My career in academic research has served me well while raising my children, but now I’m ready to bring my training and skills from the academy to support your learner in their educational journey. I offer tutoring and mentoring services in and around Portland, OR in all subjects through middle school, and most subjects through high school and college. I combine my formal academic training from a top ranking university with my curiosity about what makes each individual excel and what some of their roadblocks might be. I love children and young people, and am skilled at meeting people where they are, communicating clearly, and offering firm but compassionate structure in my sessions with students. I am sensitive to the critical balance that must be struck between the needs of the precious human in front of me and the real demands of the education system. I am very mindful of the mind-body connection and how we can only do our best in our academic pursuits when we’re also taking care of our bodies, and keep this in mind as needed in my sessions. I am not afraid of technological tools, but am mindful of the fact that everything we choose to outsource becomes a skill we fail to master. Everything is about balance. As a skilled writer and an insightful educator, Jen Hanis-Martin is an integral part of the Creative Tutoring Solutions team.
